- Build a project in Magento takes 7 months whereas build a project using other tools takes weeks
- I won’t take the certification exams until my company pays for them.
Have you ever heard (or caught yourself) saying something similar?
You may be at the presence of (or becoming) one of these people.
If you want to make sure, when they say Magento is full of bugs ask them why not to make a pull request with a bug fix or a better approach.
Chances are you will get answers like:
- I don’t have time for that.
- It is worthless, it is never going to be accepted.
- I am not going to work to make somebody else rich.
The Story
Let me tell you a story… When I first started in this world of Magento, I managed to get a job in a small e-commerce company that was using Magento. In my team there were two developers:
The Guy A
He was very talented, the kind of guy who always found a way to build the requested feature. No matter how complex or crazy, he always came up with a solution to the problem. He was always ready to help, keen to share his knowledge with other members of the team. He used to spend hours, days, debugging and analyzing the massive bunch of code inside Magento. He wasn’t limited to Magento. One day he showed me a video game he built for a friend using only JavaScript, CSS and HTML. He told me he learnt and enjoyed a lot, working on those projects. He was the kind of guy that (during our cigarette break) came and said: last night I managed to understand how the main nav works and how it is related to the flat tables.
The Guy B
The other guy was sweating every time he was assigned a task involving Magento work.
He spent days, weeks, on any task he was assigned.
He was complaining all the time.
He always came up with alternative ways to resolve a problem using plain PHP or other languages like Ruby or Python that have nothing to do with Magento.
Guy B started his own business, tried to survive for some years to finally give up and accept a position in a company as a Web Developer.
Guy A is now a Magento Master, he still loves coding, he still loves digging into the thousands of lines of code Magento has. He has been in many countries around the globe attending Magento events.
My Experience
Magento is not just a platform, Magento is a community, are friends, are travels, are events.
Conclusion
Be humble, sell yourself lower than you are. (I think this applies to everything in life)
Recognise and accept that just because you don’t know something, or you are not good at it, it does not mean that thing is crap.
Be patient and keep practicing, learning. Magento is not an easy task, you are not going to learn it overnight, but there is a great reward at the end of this road, so…
